About the Artist

Hi, I’m Shannon Blacker - the Artist!

I’m a Canadian oil painter based in Calgary. I work mostly in figurative portraiture, combining classical technique with a contemporary sensibility. My paintings capture strength — not the loud or showy kind, but the quiet, steady resilience that lives beneath the surface.

Portraits That Mean Something

I create commissioned oil portraits that are deeply personal and intentionally made. Some are traditional likenesses, others more interpretive.
While I specialize in traditional portraiture, I’ve recently started offering bespoke nude portraiture, where my focus is on capturing your authentic self—celebrating even the parts of you that are often overlooked or hard to embrace. I believe every part of you deserves to be seen, and I work with discretion to highlight the features you’re most proud of.

Figurative Work

In addition to commissioned portraits, I regularly create standalone figurative paintings. These pieces aren’t based on specific clients — they evolve from studies of form, light, and composition, often with a focus on the quiet strength and presence of the human figure.

This body of work allows me to experiment more freely with technique, mood, and visual storytelling. Some pieces are more classical, others more interpretive — but all are grounded in careful observation and a deep appreciation for the human form.

These works are not commissioned but are available to collect. You can view available pieces here. If you’d like to hear about what I’m working on right now, please join my email list for periodic updates!

As my practice has evolved, I increasingly understand just how vital it is to cultivate an empowered self-image.

In a time when so much around us can undermine agency and erode self-trust, I see portraiture as a way to reclaim space — a quiet but powerful act of self-recognition and resistance. A nude portrait is a powerful way to fortify your self-worth.

If you’re looking to celebrate your own strength and beauty, or create a meaningful tribute to someone you care about, a portrait is a lasting, timeless way to honor your own unique strength.

When I’m not painting…

You’ll likely find me with my spouse, kids, and our dogs -immersed in the beautiful chaos of family life. I love to travel, and I have an appreciation for good food. Here we are on a whirlwind trip through London (without the dogs, fortunately!) What about you—what’s your favorite kind of adventure?
